Use a Pre-Existing Topic to Introduce Your IdeaUsing a pre-existing subject for a polemic is always an interesting way to get people interested in what you have to say. Many people are not that easily impressed by a pre-existing topic, so it helps to get them on your side before they see anything you write coming from you.
Writing a preliminary topic that has some current events included is one of the best ways to do this. Letting the reader know that they can be involved in the discussion will usually open up their eyes to the fact that you are not writing out of a place of opinion. This may prove to be one of the most important steps in getting people to take your comments seriously. Consider the recent example of Bill Cosby. Millions of people were upset at the allegations that he had molested and raped several women. In fact, many of them were outraged at what he had done to them. However, did you ever wonder why so many people were upset? The answer lies in the fact that the statements coming from the 'accusers' were technically accurate. The ordinary person who was directly victimized by the actions of this famous entertainer was indeed correct in their analysis that this entertainer had committed serious wrong doing. On the other hand, a sensational subject like this is rarely one that sparks many heated conversations. More often than not, a discussion based around these types of topics would be characterized by a few loud opinions along with some very politically incorrect humor. These topics rarely end up the ones where people express what they really feel. One thing to keep in mind is that when writing on controversial topics, you want to be sure that your target audience can relate to what you are saying. You also want to be certain that the opinion is there on some level that is grounded in truth. Without a good ground for argument, there is no way for the audience to connect with your words. This is the reason why people often find that they find it hard to discuss controversial topics in front of a group of friends. Most people tend to only get into discussions with others that share the same views that they do. It would be almost impossible to start a conversation on a topic like this, if you knew your audience would react negatively. In summary, a pre-existing topic is a great way to get people interested in your polemic. The introductory paragraph should address how you are going to be different than any polemic before. Most importantly, use your subject as a way to get them on your side and use it as a way to spark some debate.
